The date snowboarding was invented is uncertain. Many people have thought of inventions considerably reasonably know as snowboards. In 1929 Jack Burchett cut out a piece of plywood and tied his feet down with horse reins and clothesline. Snowboarding was on hold for 30 years before Sherman Poppen created the “snurfer.”

The snurfer was two skies bound together with a rope on the front for control. Over a half a million snurfers were sold but were only thought of as a Childs toy. Soon after Poppen organized competitions with his new boards. As you have all heard of Burton Boards, Jake Burton became very interested in the new snurfer. Dimitrije Milovich started making snowboards in 1969. He started a company called Winterstick in 1972. By now snowboarding was getting well known. Burton made the first bindings which enabled him to win competitions easily. After Burton started producing bindings Poppen stopped selling snurfers. Snowboards became the name of these surf boards for snow. As you have also heard of Sims snowboards, Tom Sims produced his first snowboards in 1977. Burton used the surfing style boarding. Sims took the skateboarding way. He created snowboards in the image of skateboards. Sims glued carpet to the top of a piece of wood, and put aluminum sheeting on the bottom.

1980 is the official year when Burton invented the first ski technology for snowboards. In that same year Sims signed a skate/snowboarding deal with a big company called Vision Sports. Vision Sports took care of the financial problems for Sims. In 1982 the first snowboarding race was held outside Woodstock Vermont. Still during this time only 39 of the 600 ski areas allowed snowboards.
